This article focuses on the online magazine Al-Jumhuriya [The Republic], a platform for opponents to the regime of Bashar Al-Assad founded in March 2012. It traces the formation of a writers’ collective gathered around the Syrian intellectual Yassin Al-Haj Saleh and shows how the circumstances of the revolution, war and repression in Syria led to the establishment of a transnational network linking Syria from the inside to the centers of Syrian population in exile. The study examines the journal's evolution towards greater institutionalization and chronicles its internal transformations in terms of organization, format and content. It also deals with the ideological and cultural orientations of the journal and its frames of reference, notably through the study of a thematic file devoted to "the left and the question of freedom".
