Social representations of mental health by a group of professionals in Medellin city were examined. Semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 professional working in the ield of mental health were analyzed under the methodological principles of grounded theory. Mental health is assumed as an object with concrete existence which has criteria for deining its presence or absence: Selfawareness, adaptation, coping with dificulties, welfare and imperturbability. There is a tension between this concept and the one promoted by Colombian law, which promotes approaches from public health and social determinants of health. It is important to inquire about professional education and its articulation with the context.
