Abstract

Through a selection of essays, the volume provides an overview on forms of symmetry in music, analysed from a mathematical and physical perspective. The idea of translating nine essays on this topic from English to Italian can be interpreted as a laudable attempt at making them immediately usable outside the scientific domain. The first section, ‘Musicological Perspectives’, has a ‘literary’ approach and proposes different readings of music history through the filter of as many meanings of the concept of symmetry. The second, ‘Mathematical and Physical Perspectives’, has a specifically scientific approach and essentially elaborates models for the representation and visualization of the principles that are implict in musical structures, or analyzes the physical-acoustic properties of the sound object, highlighting symmetry factors in a more or less explicit way.
