Bookplates on old printed books from library of Count Adam Rzewuski and members of his family
Abstract
The goal of the research. The purpose of the work is the study of bookplates on old printedbooks from the former library of Count Adam Rzewuski and members of his family, which are kept in the Department of library and historical collections of the Institute of Book Studies of the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. Methodology. Paleographic and histori cal-chronological methods were used during the research. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time a fragment of the book collection of the Rzewuski family, which got to the Institute of Book Studies of the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine as part of the library of the Berdychiv Social-Historical museum (1926-1954) after its closure in the 1950s and has about 88 editions, including old printed books with handwritten bookplates on the title pages, superexlibris on the spines and marginalia on the pages, that belonged to Count Adam Rzewuski (1760-1825) - a Polish politician, diplomat and writer, his wife and children, will be introduced into scientific circulation. There are also books that belonged to Aleksandra Lubomirska (1788-1865), the wife of Count Waclaw-Seweryn Rzewuski (1785-1831). All publications examined in the article are oldeditions published in French between 1763-1816 in Paris, Amsterdam, London. Some of them are first editions. Also, bookplates from the library of the members of Count Adam’s family - handwritten bookplates, superexlibris and one gift inscription - will be presentedin the article for the first time. Conclusions. The unique fragment of the library of the Rzewuski family, which was preserved thanks to the efforts of the first director of the Berdychiv social-historical museum, Teodosii Movchanivskyi (1899-1938), today is a large source base for researching the book culture of the Polish aristocracy of the second half of the 18th - first third of the 19th century, as well as the history of book publishing in Western and Eastern Europe. Numerous marginalia on books, especially those belonging to Karolina Sobańska, are of particular interest for research.
