The third United Nations conference on housing and sustainable urban development – better known as “Habitat III” – took place in Quito from October 17 to 20, 2016. Following “Habitat I” (Vancouver, 1976) and “Habitat II” (Istanbul, 1996), the member states adopted a New Urban Agenda which sets out priorities for the international community in terms of urban issues. Despite how crucial these problems are and how dynamic the conference was, the media and political echoes remained quite limited. Yet, does it mean that the conference was a failure? Where should we try to find the results of such conferences? To shed light on these issues, this paper aims at analyzing the Habitat III process and the way urban issues have been dealt with and debated within the United Nations since the 1976 summit.
