Modos de reescribir la tradición: «El jardín engañoso» y «La perseguida triunfante» de María de Zayas
Abstract
One of María de Zayas’s narrative strategies is to rewrite well-known stories from a female perspective. By showing its literary models, Zayas's version appeals to the readers’ knowledge and invites them to perceive the deviations from the original in order to understand the proposed lesson. This essay analyzes the ways in which Zayas appropriates and rewrites themes from the European tradition in “The Deceitful Garden” and “Triumph over Persecution”. These two novellas, narrated on the last day of the soirée to which they belong, use different modes of composition: the first one uses typology, a method of exegesis and writing common in the Bible, while the second is almost a pastiche of medieval stories.
