A bipolar model for the 16th-century novella: Lasca and Giraldi

Abstract

The article deals with the opposition between the cultural models embodied by two capitals of the Italian Renaissance: Florence and Ferrara. In particular, it focusses on the contrast between the way the literary genre of the “novella” is cultivated in both cities, choosing Lasca’s Le Cene and Giambattista Giraldi’s Ecatommiti as the most representative texts of this cultural and literary polarity. Lasca’s oeuvre, which is unfinished, and unpublished, is close to the Quattrocento tradition and format of “novelle spicciolate”, and is obsessed by the sadistic device of the “beffa”. It shows the bright originality, as well as the backwardness and marginality, of the Florentine narrative condition in the 16th century. On the other hand, Giraldi’s exploit (even if it may be less enjoyable as for the “plaisir du texte”) opens up new narrative paths, which are full of future possibilities, and rich in the investigation of tortuous, complicated, ambiguous plots and uncommon psychological dispositions. L’articolo si sofferma sull’opposizione tra i modelli culturali espressi da due capitali del Rinascimento italiano: Firenze e Ferrara. In particolare esso mette a fuoco il contrasto tra i modi di coltivare il genere della novella in entrambe le città, scegliendo Le Cene di Lasca e gli Ecatommiti di Giambattista Giraldi come i testi più rappresentativi di questa polarità culturale e letteraria. L’opera di Lasca – incompiuta, inedita, chiusa entrola tradizione quattrocentesca e il genere delle “novelle spicciolate”, ossessionata dall’espediente sadico della “beffa” – manifestala geniale originalità, ma anche l’arretratezza e la marginalità, della situazione della narrativa fiorentina del XVI secolo. L’impresa di Giraldi (sebbene forse meno godibile sul piano del “plaisir du texte”) apre invece nuovi percorsi narrativi, gravidi di prospettive future, e ricchi nella ricerca di intrecci tortuosi, complicati, ambigui e di inedite attitudini psicologiche.
