Opening research data is now “mandatory”, when data are not protected by copyright, personal data regulations or trade secrets. This requires a careful analysis of data prior to its collection, in order to ensure it is “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”. This also entails gathering diversely skilled people to work together and allocating a sufficient budget.
