Who killed Spitzenkandidat?

Abstract

The paper analyses the process of the new EU Commission President’s nomination and election, as well as the other EU leaders. Based on results of the extraordinary EU summit (June 30 – July 1, 2019), which «buried» the Spitzenkandidaten system, as well as the debates in the European Parliament, the author concludes that not only the heads of state and government, but also European political parties and the MEPs are responsible for the failure of nominating a leading candidate.
