In order to prepare his trip to Paris to study architecture and decoration, the military engineer and architect Balthasar Neumann, who had been entrusted with designing a new prince-bishop’s castle in Würzburg, consciously drew on the travel literature available at the time. This can be deduced not only from his correspondence with his master, but also from the catalogue of his personal library, which lists many relevant titles, even though the books were auctioned after his death.
