This paper presents a handheld DBH (Tree’s Diameter at Breast Height) measurement system based on a linear laser diode and a low cost complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor. For proposed measurement system, laser reflected from an object falls on photosensitive surface of CMOS image sensor, and stumpage image containing laser speckles was received and transmitted to the PC, finally, image preprocessing and target stumpage DBH calculating were completed by MATLAB. In this paper, a measurement system was built, and its feasibility and correctness were verified, then experiment results were analyzed under the condition of different surface roughness, cylindricity of stumpage, and different laser speckles extraction. Analysis results provide an important foundation for the follow-up study.
