The development of Tamil grammar starts with “Tholkaappiyam”. It is only through “Tholkaappiyam” that one can know about the texts that existed before “Tholkaappiyam”. Since the development of linguistics, our view of grammar has changed. The scope of the study is wide, as literary principles, and grammar methods are compared. Linguistically, grammar is classified into different types. Ancient grammar methods are defined as genetic grammar. Its development from “Tholkaappiyam” to later grammar has gone through various stages. Various traditions have emerged over time and influenced the development of grammar. Primary-Secondary Work Tradition and Separate Book Tradition are the first among them. The Separate Book Tradition is a significant change in the development of Tamil grammar. Sanskrit dominated Tamil as it influenced other Indian languages. The grammatical formation is the starting point of grammatical development. Factors such as time, society, culture, author, etc. take precedence in the formation of grammar. So far, more than a hundred grammar books have evolved. All of them are approachable from a comparative perspective. Based on such grammatical construction, this study explains the main elements and significant changes in the stages of development of Tamil grammar.
