This article analyzes the factors that influenced the accidents occurred on the highway BR-101, in the State of Alagoas, between 2013 and 2017, comparing them with the public policies for traffic accidents reduction in Brazil. The theoretical bases used were concepts of traffic, accidents and their relationship of public safety, accident impacts and public policies to reduce accidents in Brazil and in the world. A factorial analysis was performed on 46 variables extracted from the data of 2,554 accidents provided by the Federal Highway Police. As result, ten factors were defined that explain about 71.15% of the total variance of the occurrences. In the end, the ten factors were compared with the public policies for accident reduction and it was identified that they cover the factors that most influenced the accidents occurred in highway BR-101, in Alagoas.
