Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) encompass a broad range of conditions characterized by progressive neuronal degeneration and death and manifesting with a variety of signs and symptoms ranging from reduced cognitive function to motor dysfunctions. NDs share a number of molecular and pathogenic mechanism, the most frequent of which is oxidative stress (OS). Currently, no ND is curative, and the therapies offered merely control symptoms or slow illness development. As a result, current therapy research has focused on developing multi-targeted therapeutic approaches. This approach is also consistent with natural product derivatives with multi-targeted characteristics, such as phytochemicals. Because of their antioxidant effects, alkaloids, one of the phytochemicals, have the potential to cure NDs by targeting the OS mechanism. Role of plant derived alkaloids (34) as antioxidant agents for NDs are summarized in this review.
