The article is an evaluation of the tourist situation in Martinique now facing stiff regional competition. The analysis focuses on the potential of this small mountainous island (1128 km2) in the area of forest ecotourism. This new focus is meant to enhance a tourist potential which is still largely limited to the seaside and its attractions. Ecotourism can also be a tool not only for forest resource management but also a means for promoting development initiatives in the less developed mountainous regions of Martinique.
