Like other former French colonies in Africa, local languages in Senegal know little development due to the assimilation policy. Schools have been settled with the intention of avoiding national languages inclusion so as to lay the foundations of a historic domination of the French language. The teaching strategies set up at the time of independence consisted in reproducing identically the educational approaches inherited from the colonial period. Towards the end of 1970s, the government decided to introduce the national languages on an experimental basis into the formal system in partnership with the French language. The diglossic situation gradually diminishes as far as oral languages have been codified, becoming standard mediums or their linguistic equipment continues to be developed. In so doing, bilingualism serves as a better development of the learner both in the field of linguistic knowledge and communication skills and also affective abilities which allow the anchoring of the early learning in the pupil’s mother tongue.
