T lymphocytes, as a vital component of the adaptive immune system, play a crucial role in maintaining immune health. A thorough investigation of their maturation and aging processes is essential for achieving a comprehensive understanding of the immune system. In this review, we provide an overview of the developmental trajectory of various T cell subsets, encompassing not only the well-known naive, effector, memory subgroups and regulatory T cells, but also delving deeper into unconventional and distinct subgroups such as γδ T cells, mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells, and natural killer T (NKT) cells. We place particular emphasis on the myriad transformations these cells undergo during the aging process. The advent of single-cell technology in recent years has significantly advanced our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying T cell development and aging. In conclusion, we highlight potential avenues for addressing the persistent challenges encountered in T cell maturation and aging research.
