Following the 2003 preventive archaeology's reform, the territorial authority have been given clear regulations allowing them to invest in this field if they wish. The first results show that this regulation has been adopted but only by some. A few departmental and interdistrict services have been created and the already existing services increased in size. There will be no major change if the gouvernment does not give more power to the local authority and make preventive archaeology compulsory. For now, the geographical distribution is uneven. This is due to the pressure of development in the fast growing zone of french territory, concerning in particular the Paris Bassin, the mediterranean coast and the TGV route.
