Starting with a reflection on the application in game studies of Christian Metz’s consideration of the narrative as a double temporal sequence between the time of the thing told and the time of the narrative (2013, p. 30-31), this paper aims to address the issue of narration in video games as a whole. The specificity of this particular narration is here considered to be the establishment of a dynamic dialog between creators and users. The main concern of the paper is to unify various ways to tackle the question of video games’ narrative construction – whether they are mostly approaching this construction from a game or play perspective – into a simple model.
