The development and meaning of Bandello’s famous assertion – that his short stories are not fiction but true history – are varied and rich. In the literary and fictional world that he depicts with the colours of an illusory realism, it is not rare to find meaningful tales in which frame, events and characters are clearly or claimed congruent and consonant with historical subjects and sources. This is the case of the two tales analyzed here to investigate Bandello’s writing and his reworking sources: the first one of the whole work (I, 1), the source of which is Machiavelli, and the much wider II, 37, particularly interesting for its complex structure that makes up events from different historical times together.
