During the second half of the 18th century, the economic and political life in the city of Santo Domingo was controlled by a social group formed mainly by landowners of both Creole and Spanish descent, who established socioeconomic, political and family ties. As a result, several families dominated the various spheres of power on the island and particularly in the city of Santo Domingo. These close relationships reflect the strategies used by these families to consolidate their position and interests. The example of the Campuzano-Polanco family is used in this paper.
