Clinical-epidemiological characterization of patients with thyroid cancer attended at the Territorial Oncology Center in Holguin
Abstract
Introduction: thyroid cancer represents 90% of all endocrine system tumors. It can develop from follicular cells, such as papillary, follicular and anaplastic carcinomas, or from parafollicular cells, such as medullary carcinoma. Objective: proceed with the clinical-epidemiological characterization of patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the Territorial Oncology Center of Holguin, from January 2020 to December 2020. Methods: an observational descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The study universe was made up of 35 patients who met the inclusion criteria. We worked with the entire universe. The variables studied were as follow: age, sex, clinical extension and clinical stage. The descriptive statistic method was used. Results: patients between 40 and 49 years of age (57.1 %) and the female sex (68.6 %) were the predominant groups. The histological variety of papillary carcinoma was the most frequent (62.9%). Lesions with localized clinical extension (68.6 %) and clinical stage I (56.7 %) predominated. Conclusions: adult female patients with papillary carcinoma, localized clinical extension and early clinical stages predominated in the study. The percentage of age, sex and histological variety were considerably lower than in the research consulted.
