Amateur soccer environment presents considerable differences of social and economic order in relation to the high performance soccer. However, perception of physical and mental exhaustion, devaluation and feelings of desertion can be observed in both contexts. These elements are characteristics of burnout syndrome, considered a reaction to chronic stress that can lead to the early retirement of sports activity. The present study aimed to measure burnout dimensions in young amateur soccer players and evaluate the age effect in burnout perception. The study included 110 amateur athletes with 18.02 ± 1.38 years that started playing soccer at 10.41 ± 1.73 years; 49 athletes from age group under 17, and 61 athletes from age group under 20. Participants completed the Portuguese version of Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (QBA) and a demographic questionnaire. For data analysis were used descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney test. The significance index was p <0.05. The physical and emotional exhaustion dimension presented frequency that ranged from almost never to rarely. Reduced sense of sport accomplishment and sport devaluation dimensions, as well as total burnout, presented frequency that ranged from rarely to sometimes. Athletes presented low to moderate rates of total burnout and its dimensions. Therefore, participants have low tendency to the syndrome’s manifestation. It was not identified age effect on burnout perception among young amateur soccer players.
