In 2017, Jean-Yves Casanova (Marseilles, 1957) published a Cantata per Maria Magdalena/Cantate pour Marie Madeleine, n.p., La Pantiera. This poetic and musical ensemble is part of the long tradition of texts dedicated to the legendary presence of Mary Magdalene in Provence, notably around the site of the Sainte Baume. Rooted in the strictly Occitan side of this vast tradition, from Burles at the end of the 16th century to Mistral, the Casanova cantata is also a very personal text, echoing the author’s poetic and romantic work, not to mention his critical production (most recently La Perte: Stendhal, Proust, Céline, Pau, La Pantiera, 2018).
