Association between oral health and energy drink consumption
Abstract
Introduction: Energy drinks are currently widely consumed due to their ability to increase resistance, performance and energy to perform daily activities, they are associated with oral health due to their high capacity to cause erosions, hypersensitivity and dental caries due to its components such as caffeine and citric acid. Objective: describe the association between energy drinks and diseases in the oral cavity. Method: Through the research approach carried out in this article through bibliographic reviews using the Pubmed, Scielo, Dialnet, Google Scholar databases without limit of years in order to obtain studies about energy drinks and their effects on the cavity oral. Development: it was possible to find several associations between the consumption of energy drinks, and the affectation in oral health, especially that alteration defined on the hard tissues of the tooth, such as erosion or dental wear, with some in vitro studies it was possible to conclude that an environment and acidic pH, can harm and predispose the mineral wear of dental tissue after prolonged exposure, especially in cases where the presence of saliva decreases, since it stops fulfilling its cleansing and buffering role. Conclusions: The excessive consumption of energy drinks can influence oral health, it was found in several bibliographical reviews that the components contained in energy drinks can cause diseases not only at the oral level, but also at the systemic level, one of these substances is caffeine.
