Environmental monitoring is essential for the control of degradation and preservation, particularly in the areas of the Caatinga biome. The aim of this research is to identify temporal change in preserved Caatinga vegetation using the NDVI vegetation index. The area of research is the Experimental Basin of Aiuaba (12 km²), located in the municipality of Aiuaba, Ceará state. This basin is located in the micro region of Inhamuns of the Brazilian semi-arid zone. It is fully preserved because it is situated within the Ecological Station of Aiuaba, the largest federal conservation unit of the Caatinga biome. The results of this research showed that there is strong variation in NDVI values during the year due to seasonal variation of leaf cover and not the density of vegetation.
