Retrospective cataloging of periodicals of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from 1918 to 1930 from the collections of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine
Abstract
The purpose of the article is to highlight the peculiarities of the analysis of the retrospective array of academic periodicals and collections of 1918-1930 from the archives of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. Using the example of the journal of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine "People’s Creativity and Ethnology" to reveal the process of recologising academic periodicals. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity and systematicity, as well as the use of special methods of description, comparison, library science, document science, statistical and retrospective analysis. Scientific novelty. The importance of re-archiving the retrospective part of the periodicals of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from the funds of the National Academy of Sciences is substantiated. The factors that determine the peculiarities of the process of rearchalogization of academic periodicals in modern conditions, the requirements for the formation of a database of the retrospective part of publications, bibliographic records and descriptions are disclosed. Conclusions. Emphasis is placed on the importance of retro-cataloging of journals and ongoing publications to improve the Library’s search engine, on the need to popularize the database of the retrospective part of scientific periodicals among consumers of information, users of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. A huge array of the retrospective part of academic periodicals is kept on the shelves of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine fund storage. To a large extent, these are collections and magazines that began to be published by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as early as 1918. They are an invaluable asset of the Ukrainian people. The urgent problem related to the preservation, presentation and use of this unique property needs its final solution. The creation of a database of retro-editions of academic journals, continued editions based on the existing traditional card catalog, and inclusion of all journals of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from the beginning of the 20th century remains especially relevant to the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine electronic catalog. The process of digitizing the texts of numbers, issues, volumes of journals and continuing editions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine at the beginning of the 20th century contributes to the re-cataloging of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine card catalog.
