Memory is today exploited by the far right, including when it comes to the memory of the Shoah which is new and paradoxical, at the same time as by identity groups claiming to be far left but drifting towards the far right. Meanwhile, the State defends a heritage memory that flirts with nationalism. And it neglects the memories of slavery and colonization, but also working and popular memories, which generates numerous tensions in civil society. This situation favors the war of memories and the rise of closed identities, which potentially threaten democracy.
