Enhancing the doctoral experience: factors influencing academic success and well-being of Ph.D. students in a cultural context
Abstract
This qualitative research delved into the myriad factors influencing the academic journey of Ph.D. students, primarily within a specific cultural and geographic context. Through in-depth interviews with three participants, several themes emerged, elucidating the dynamics of the doctoral experience. The study highlighted the role of institutional support as pivotal in shaping the academic trajectory, with cultural and familial expectations acting as significant external influences. Personal resilience and adaptability stood out as intrinsic factors determining success, while the value of interpersonal relationships and collaboration became evident as crucial for academic growth. Global exposure and mentorship quality emerged as vital elements, enhancing academic outcomes and personal development. The study underscored the importance of work-life balance and emotional well-being in the context of rigorous academic pursuits. Curricular relevance and flexibility, integration of technology, and access to research resources were identified as essential for fostering in-depth exploration and innovative research. The study also accentuated the significance of a continuous feedback culture and the transformative power of an interdisciplinary approach. Despite its limitations, primarily regarding participant diversity and geographical focus, the findings offer valuable insights for academic institutions, mentors, and students, emphasizing holistic support mechanisms and adaptive curricula to enhance the doctoral experience.
