Background. The pathogenesis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, risk factors and clinical picture are presented. Mechanisms of origination of different retinal holes and ruptures are described as well as the examination of the patient suspected to have retinal detachment. A review of a different surgical techniques for that kind of retinal detachment is given with special emphasis on scleral buckling procedures, pneumatic retinopexy and Lincoff Kreissig balloon.Conclusions. Because of very good anatomical and functional success and low number of complications, minimal surgery (scleral buckle, pneumatic retinopexy, Lincoff balloon) remains the method of choice in the treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
