This article deals with a remarkable linguistic phenomenon in the poetry of Ibn Chouhaid (382H/992 A.D- 426H/1035 A.D). It is about strange terms. Definitions of the term (Al-Ġharib), among ancient and modern Arabic lexicographers, show that it means ambiguity of saying within some, and unusual use of some lexical units within others. The study of a sample of strange terms in Ibn Chouhaid’s poetry, conditions of his literary formation, and taking into consideration his poetical vision, prove that this last - as a pure Andalusian poet of new classical Arabic- used this kind of words with the aim of giving lexical ampleness for his poetry, satisfying his wish to imitate the most famous Arabic poets of Near East according to the prevailing manner in his time, and then, the least of his worries was to be proud or to boast of his lexical wealth, as he was criticized by some Arabic critics.
