A cost-effective novel technique for intra-articular arthroscopic biopsy
Abstract
Aim and objective: A cost-effective novel technique for collecting intra-articular biopsy. Background: Arthroscopy is considered the gold standard for collecting intra-articular biopsies amidst numerous techniques described by various authors.Traditional biopsy techniques are associated with inadequate tissue sample, larger incision, prolonged hospital stay, infection, joint stiffness and contamination of biopsy tract, our new technique of intra articular biopsy deals with it in this era of arthroscopy. Technique: Gauze net filter technique. Conclusion: This technique can be maneuvered easily by putting standard knee arthroscopic incisions, portals and placing sterile gauze piece between shaver outlet and suction tube.It allows the collection of adequate tissue even from smaller intra-articular joints. This technique is simple and cost-effective since it can be used for direct visualization with native topography of pathology, minimum incision, minimum hospital stay, adequate tissue sample collection, and minimum contamination of biopsy tract along with joint debridement and joint lavage, thereby making it advantageous for both patients and surgeons. Clinical significance: simple, easy to perform, reduced procedure duration, cost-effective.
