Objective:Sleep is one of the main living activities having physiological, psychological and social aspects that affect the life and health of the individual. It is known that emotional states as sadness, anxiety, and depression impairs sleeping pattern of the individuals and affects the sleep quality. Cardiac angiography, which is a reliable diagnostic procedure, may also cause emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, and sadness. This study aimed to evaluate whether sleep quality of patients that undergoing cardiac angiography is affected or not.Materials and Methods:This study carried out in a cross-sectional and descriptive manner with patients who were hospitalized between 15 July and 15 August 2018 for cardiac angiography in the cardiology service of a medical faculty hospital. The study was conducted with 108 patients who were volunteers and eligible for study criteria. Data were collected five days a week for one month in the morning before patients were taken to the angiography procedure. “Patient Identification form” and “Visual Analog Sleep Quality scale” were used to collect data. Results:The scale score of female patients were found significantly higher scores than males (p=0.02); the score of unmarried patients was higher than married; the score of unemployed patients had higher than employed (p=0.04); the score of those living alone had higher than those who live with their families (p=0.01); the score of those who could not sleep the day before angiography procedure was found higher than those who slept. It was also found that education level, day of deciding on angiography and thought of having problems with sleep were not effective on the total score of the scale (p>0.05).Conclusion:We can suggest that angiography, which is an important diagnostic procedure and is a common process, negatively affects the sleep quality of the patients. Besides, our results have shown that some personal characteristics of the patients are effective on sleep quality.
