Abstract
This paper presents a study on the transformations in the landscape of the Varosa valley from the 12th to 19th centuries, where the monasteries of Santa Maria de Salzedas and S. João de Tarouca were founded. Profound changes were operated, particularly in agriculture, with the establishment of «granjas» (granges) and other small rural holdings, the construction of roads and bridges and the settlement of population
