Abstract This resource is a PowerPoint lecture on diabetes in African Americans. The lecture was composed in order to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge on diabetes health disparities. It was created following a literature review on the subject and finding data on the Centers for Disease Control, Office of Minority Health, and National Institutes of Health websites to support the learning objectives. A curriculum on cultural competence that the author helped develop is included. The lecture also utilizes the RESPECT model, an action-oriented communication skill set with which to build trust across racial and cultural barriers. Multiple-choice questions and an example clinical case that threads through the lecture help to maintain audience engagement. By the end of the lecture, participants should be able to identify the current epidemiologic data of Diabetes in African Americans and the challenges and opportunities to improve the care of patients in this group.
