Giant valley splitting in monolayer WS2 by magnetic proximity effect

Abstract

Valley degree of freedom promises the additional control of electrons in 2D materials but is limited by small valley splitting. Here the authors show heavily enhanced valley splitting in monolayer WS2 on EuS substrate due to competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions for Eu- and S-terminated EuS surface sites.
