The accession of Poland to the European Union on May 1st, 2004 involved enormous possibilities for the Polish, especially in the area of free movement of persons, services, goods and capital. In addition, a gradual elimination of barriers to enter the EU’s labour market intensified migration, mainly on economic grounds, as the directions of migration were dependent on labour markets in the member states of the EU. In 2004 there were only three labour markets open for the Polish: in Great Britain, Ireland and Sweden; in the following years other markets kept opening and in 2011 the whole labour market of the EU was open for the Polish. There are many reasons that make the Polish leave the country and settle down in one ofthe member states of the EU but economic motives remain the most important ones.
