Neuromyelitis Optica
Abstract
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a rare, idiopathic,inflammatory disease affecting the spine andcharacteristically sparing the brain. It mimics multiplesclerosis (MS) in many aspects. A case report of 55 yearold house-maker, with recurrent attacks of flaccidweakness with visual and bladder disturbances who wasadmitted in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation(PMR) ward for neuro-rehabilitation is presented. Herserological studies and magnetic resonance imaging ofthe spine and brain revealed a diagnosis of idiopathicdemyelinating disease affecting the spine – Devic’sdisease.
