Hemorrhoids are a very common and often chronic anorectal condition defined as the symptomatic enlargement and distal displacement of the normal anal cushions. Hemorrhoidal disease is as old as the human race. From the ancient times to the present days many treatment modalities, nonsurgical and surgical, have been introduced searching for a balance between patient satisfaction after sympthoms are resolved and acceptable complications, with better or worse results. The discussion about the most appropriate method of treatment continues till today. This article presents different modalities of hemorrhoidal treatment over time, reviewing on the efficacy and complications of each treatment modality as well as the current recommendations.
