The proliferation and globalization of the scientifi c literaturehave evidence the necessity of creating a system ofevaluation, qualifi cation and comparison of the quality forthis kind of production. Answering this necessity, differentinstitutions had included scales and indicators for theevaluation and qualifi cation of the effect that a publicationhas on the scientific environment. Now a days, thesesystems are considered a useful tool of for the evaluationof the investigation process, even though it questionableindependence, representatively and validity, are reasonof controversy. The objective of the present article is toexplore the origins, advantages, disadvantages and newtendencies in the development of bibliometric indicators andtheir application like tool for the evaluation of the scientifi cproduction.
