A short introduction defines the history (1705-2009) of the popular version. The main hero of the Rumanian puppets is Vasilache. He is comparable to Kasperle, Guignol, Petruschka, Karagöz, Polichinelle, Pinocchio, Punch and so on. Each one is commented or put in relation with a fixed place (urban theatre) or mobile place (formations or repertories linked to theater groups of ambulant comedians, or property of one or several families). The dates proposed by Christian Pepino, the greatest Rumanian specialist of puppet theatre, indicate the principal stages of the introduction of puppets in their modern form, the consolidation of this theatre as an institutionalized cultural fashion for a public of adults or children. Beginning in the 19th century, the principal languages (hungarian, yiddish, german, rumanian) supported this form of spectacle. The article provides also a history of the mention of puppet’s theatre by writers.
