Despite scattered criticisms of the philosophical and mathematical foundations of the theory of spatial syntax and ongoing discussions about its application, this method has proven to be a powerful conceptual tool for analyzing the built environment. The main objective of this research is to answer the question of what characteristics the spatial order of contemporary housing in Shiraz has from a syntactic perspective, and how these characteristics influence the functional performance of housing. Therefore, identifying the spatial composition through the study of architectural plans is an important source. For this purpose, 384 residential plans were collected, and based on them, spatial order patterns were identified in terms of form (having both central and axial order) and space. Then, 15 samples were analyzed using software analysis, and their justification graphs were presented. In the final stage, a final analysis was conducted based on variables (continuity and depth), and ultimately the spatial value in each sample was evaluated. The results of the analyses conducted in this study demonstrate a positive relationship between the spatial configuration pattern and the functional performance level of contemporary housing layouts, through a comparative analytical method. The present research indicates that, despite the presence of division spaces and central nodes, the structure starts with a bushy configuration and a sequential performance of spaces. From a spatial perspective, it is believed that the arrangement of spaces can have a significant impact on the functional performance of those spaces, both logically and mathematically. Based on the obtained data, it can be concluded that centrally located houses are considered more efficient quantitatively and statistically. Therefore, if high levels of participatory behaviors and social interactions are desired, central systems with multiple nodes and more spatial loops, less depth, and higher coherence are more supportive of such behaviors, which aligns well with Iranian family culture.
