Bis(2-Cyclooctylidenehydrazene-1-carbothioamide)Zinc(II), a good single source precursor for ZnS nanoparticles – Synthesis and crystal structure
Abstract
2-Cyclooctylidenehydrazene-1-carbothioamide and its Zinc complex Bis(2-Cyclooctylidenehydrazene-1-carbothioamide)Zinc(II), [(C9H16N3S)2Zn] that can be used as a single source precursor for ZnS, were synthesized and characterised by CHNS analysis, IR and SCXRD studies. The complex was found to belong to Monoclinic crystal system with space group P21/n, where a = 15.9645(17) Å, b = 15.2974(12) Å, c = 19.185(2) Å, α = 90° β = 110.142(3)°, γ = 90°, V = 4398.6(7) Å3 and Z = 8 and also a number of short term interactions involving four inter molecular hydrogen bonds make possible a three dimensional lattice structure for this crystal. Thermal decomposition of this precursor complex by polyol method in a high boiling solvent Glycerol gave high quality mono-dispersed crystalline ZnS nanoparticles having size ranges between 4.51 and 8.76 nm with homogenous distribution. Further characterisation studies of these particles were done by SEM, EDX, TEM, PXRD, UV and PL.
