This article is devoted to the issue of formation of social memory and commemorative culture in the process of school education. Theoretical analysis of the main approaches to the study of social memory and commemoration allows demonstrating the connection between these phenomena by defining commemoration as one of the mechanisms of social memory that helps society or group to clips in memory of its members significant events of the past. Comparative analysis of russian and foreign researches of commemoration allows to identify the key characteristics of commemorative cultures of different countries. Much attention is given to the role of the institution of school education in this process, because it presents information of the major events of the past, with their interpretation and attitude towards them in society, commemoration practices and, as a result, the formation of commemorative culture in general. Thus, the author considers these key concepts of the article through the prism of the institute of school education.
