‘The Season of Light’: Optics in Measurement and Control

Abstract

Optical methods and techniques have had a profound effect upon the field of measurement and control in recent years. With the use of fibre-optics and components ‘spun-off’ from the optical communications industry, a number of important systems have been developed. A range of fibre-optic sensor systems and their applications were discussed by Prof Grattan in his President's Address, and the future potential of the field outlined.
