This study aims to expose the transformations that have taken place in the border area between the River Uruguay and the cities of Santo Tomé - Ar and São Borja - Br. To this end, a deductive approach and the historical procedure method were used. In the first instance, the study addresses the importance of the River Uruguay for the aforementioned region and its uses over time, followed by a discussion of the transformations and impacts of commercial relations since the construction of the International Integration Bridge. The study concludes that although the River Uruguay still has great importance for the region, the transformations linked to the construction of the International Bridge have reconfigured its role and also the role of the Passo neighborhood, eliminating the “comércio formiga” in the river and deconstructing the flow of boats in the river, causing economic retraction in this context.
