Abstract This problem-based learning discussion (PBLD) is designed to facilitate a group discussion among the participants using a real-world clinical case scenario to consolidate self-directed learning. The clinical case scenario involves a premature infant with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia requiring complex airway surgery, highlighting several anesthetic challenges. After presentation of the case stem, the instructor moderates a student-centered group discussion, using a series of questions and a review of relevant literature. The author encountered this complex clinical case scenario involving several anesthetic challenges. It was subsequently developed as a PBLD and was presented twice at the American Society of Anesthesiologists' annual meeting in Washington, DC in October 2012. A variety of anesthesia care providers, including anesthesiology trainees and anesthesiologists from academic institutions and private practice, participated in the discussion and the evaluations were uniformly positive. It has also been used at the author's institution with anesthesiology residents and pediatric anesthesiology fellows as a part of their PBLD curriculum.
