Much has been said about student assessment, especially in Higher Education, which has received harsh comments. In fact, this topic deserves special attention, concerning its study and aiming at glancing at practical possibilities which may enhance learning. In this paper, our focus is on showing our experience in using portfolios in a Languages Course, in a Higher Education institution in the countryside of São Paulo. In the aforementioned study, which was implemented and conducted in one semester, we were able to reflect on the implications of such innovative evaluation process, as well as its difficulties. Based on the reflections, made by the subjects and the researcher, we aim at offering a practical view of a process that has been the core of a lot of discussions.
