IMAGINATIVE COMPONENT OF THE LINGUO-CULTURAL CHARACTER TYPE «BUSINESS MAN» IN RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH
Abstract
Background. Since the beginning of the 2000s the theory of linguo-cultural types has been developing in Russian linguistics. Still, the linguo-cultural type ‘business man’ has not yet received its comprehensive description. Purpose. To identify common and specific features of the imaginative component of the linguo-cultural type ‘business man’ and its subtypes in the Russian and English languages. Materials and methods. The research is based on the comparative-descriptive method and thematic analysis method. The research material is a sample of examples from the Russian National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English from 2000 to 2019, containing lexemes nominating the linguo-cultural types under study (several thousand examples for each language). Excluded from the analysis are examples in which these lexemes are used in other meanings, are part of names, or point to the realities of the past, other countries, or fantasy worlds. Results. The common and specific features of the imaginative component of the linguo-cultural type ‘business man’ and its subtypes in the Russian and English languages are identified. The identified features relate both to the most important topics in the examples (‘age’, ‘mode of thought’, ‘career’, ‘criminality’, ‘wealth’, ‘success’), and to the characteristics attributed to these types. Differences in the use of different elements of lexical-semantic fields corresponding to these types are also revealed.
