Profile of effective organ and tissue donors from a north-northeast referral hospital

Abstract

Objective: To characterize the profile of effective organ and tissue donors in a referral hospital in the northnortheast.Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data from organ and tissue donors registered at the Intra-Hospital Transplant Organ and Tissue Donation Committee, in January 2016 to December 2017. Data collection took place in January 2018.Results: Of the 428 potential donors identified, 376 (88%) were eligible donors and only 136 (32%) effective donors. The main cause of death was related to Brain Stroke (54%) and family non-authorization was the main reason for non-donation (45%).Conclusion: It is necessary to invest more in campaigns focused on information and awareness of the population regarding the importance of organ and tissue donation, consequently increasing the number of donors.
